About Us

Jack Spearman founded Spearman Cycles on Crown Street, Wollongong. The original signage remains on the building, a symbol of the store's deep roots in the local community.

After Jack’s passing, David Hansen took over Spearman Cycles, continuing its legacy and expanding its reach within the Illawarra region.

Ryan joined the business in 2001, and the store relocated to Figtree, where it grew steadily over the next decade. Jessica and Tom also became key team members during this time.

The store expanded again, moving to Keira Street in Wollongong, becoming one of the largest bike stores in Australia and solidifying its reputation as a cycling destination.

In 2017, the store rebranded to Giant Wollongong, fully aligning with the Giant Bicycles brand to offer the latest in cycling technology and innovations.

After almost 40 years of ownership, David made the decision to retire, and Ryan and Jessica took on ownership of Giant Wollongong. 

Jessica (Store owner)

Jessica was introduced to the world of cycling as a junior triathlete, working at Spearman Cycles whilst competing in Ironman at the highest level. Not many can boast multiple Hawaiian ironman finishes, let alone podiums. Over the years Jessica has raced and ridden across many cycling disciplines, and has a proud relationship and history with the women’s brand, Liv Cycling. Jessica joined the team in 2007.

Ryan (Store Owner)

Ryan has always had a passion for bikes. Whether its Mountain, Road, or triathlon, he’s ridden and raced them all over the world. Today he uses all his experience to get his customers on the right bike with the right advice, while still ripping the local trails and having fun. Ryan has been an integral part of the business since 2001. They say he has blue blood - always proud to represent Giant bicycles.

Tadgh (mechanic):

Pronounced “Tiger” with out the ‘R’ …. It’s Irish. The smiling face you will see on all the local bunch rides. Tadgh recently joined our workshop team, but his knowledge for bicycles doesn’t stop in the workshop. With a background in Triathlon and road racing, he’s also not afraid to line up on the start line of a mountain bike race, which means his knowledge of bikes, and all the modern gear is second to none.

Bikes of choice: Giant Propel advanced SL, Giant Trinity advanced SL and Giant Defy advanced SL (what can we say.... he loved Road!).

Daryl (Sales)

Bikes have always been a part of daryl’s life. From BMX in the 80’s, to riding the local trails on his Trance E + Mountain bike. With over 10 years experience in the industry, he is here to help you find your next bike or for advice on what you might need on your next ride.

Gary (mechanic)

Gary joined our team in 2025 after moving to Wollongong. He has a background in Mountain biking and BMX, and a long history working on bikes. Gary has a wealth of knowledge on mountain bikes, and is ready to help get your bike running tip top again.

Riley (Mechanic)

Bikes have always been a part of Riley's family. In 2025 Riley joined our workshop team full time after finishing school and deciding to take a 'gap year'. What can we say - bikes must be cool, as he decided to stay!

Tom (Mechanic and Salesman)

What can’t Tom do! Tom joined our team as a junior, and has been with us ever since. Whllst he may have moved into a new role running his own gym, you will still see Tom's friendly face in the store here and there giving us a hand during busy times. We just cant keep him away!

Seattle

One of our very awesome Junior staff members. Seattle and Zane joined our team after having their e-bikes stolen, and needing a way to work towards purchasing some new bikes to get around town. Seattle loves mountain biking, road riding and trirathlon, and is an especailly great runner. Don't let their youth fool you. They know their gear and are here to help you get the perfect product.

Tomoki

One of our very awesome Junior staff members. Tomoki is often found in the workshop learning the ropes from our senior mechanics. He is a young gun at just about every sport he tries.

Zane

One of our very awesome Junior staff members. Zane has grown up riding bikes, and his passion and knowledge for bikes already shines through. Another tallented young athlete Zane has raced Mountain bikes and Triathlon. Don't let their youth fool you. They know their gear and are here to help you get the perfect product.
